Personalised learning versus collaborative learning?
Apr 17 2008, 10:30 AM EDT How can we make every pupils educational journey different without losing the powerful effect of collaborative learning? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Personalised learning versus collaborative learning?
Apr 17 2008, 3:44 PM EDT Prior to being able to reconcile the above I think we need a shared view of what we mean by personalised learning and collaborative learning as both are well used but not with a single meaning. My own understanding of personalised learning is informed by the work of David Hargraves and his nine gateways as these form a useful way of personalising the learning experience. Taking this as the starting point for personalised learning, collaborative learning is a useful tool within this structure to further enhance the learning experience as it enables pupils to work with peers within their 'zone of proximal development' (Vygotsky, 1978), to enable them to achieve things they were unable to do without assistance. RE: Personalised learning versus collaborative learning?
May 1 2008, 6:01 PM EDT Good point Donna, so lets take Hargraves nineways as charisteristic of personalised learning (ref: http://www.innovation-unit.co.uk/images/stories/files/pdf/iuncslpersonalisedlearning.pdf) and Vygotsky's theory (ref: Vygotsky, L. (1978). Mind in society: The development of higher psychological processes. Cambridge: Harvard University Press) as starting points. Now there is obviously a dynamic tension between these two goals, but I feel that we could achieve both aims by avoiding a 'fixed ends, fixed means' model. What I mean by this is, when resources are developed, the tighter the outcomes are specified, the more various means of achieving them are encouraged and supported. Similiarly the more closely working methods are specified , the more variety there is in the acceptable range of outcomes. In essence it would hopefully be possible for a pupil to construct a route through tasks which are personal to them but which need interaction and collaboration with others to succeed. This would I suppose rule out linear worksheet/cookbook type tasks but positively encourage hyperlinked nonlinear collaborative projects. So what do you think? Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Personalised learning versus collaborative learning?
May 25 2008, 9:09 AM EDT I agree with pupils having an opportunity to choose their route through a unit of work. I think technology will be of great assistance with systems such as VLEs allowing pupils to access support material and use their teacher for advice and guidance rather than as the font of all knowledge. This will assist a move from the current prevalent behaviourist culture in our schools to a social constructivist model where the co-construction of knowledge through collaboration is enabled both on and off screen through cyber-space collaboration or good old face to face collaboration.
