Wikipedia defines a wiki as

‘software that allows users to collaboratively create, edit, link, and organize the content of a website, usually for reference material.’

It goes on to say

‘Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites’

and that’s what really excites us.

We see this new style of site as a way of joining ownership with a community that care enough to be involved with the development of the project.

Wikipedia defines WEB2.0 as

‘…a trend in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to facilitate creativity, information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. The term became notable after the first O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end-users use webs.’

At Nuffield we are trying to use the STEM project as a prototype for testing this technology. Although some appear to have a brilliant idea, they lack funding, and therefor lack the reliability of other web applications.

As we go along we will encounter these applications, good and bad, and should try to let each other know what’s out there and what works. I have created a webpage that you can use, and update at will with my findings.

To edit the site, first you will need to register with wetpaint. After you have, please feel free to edit any page as you see fit (even this one!). However, we do ask you to stick to a basic house style so that the site looks professional and consistent.

To edit a page click on the ‘Easy Edit’ which can be found at the top left of each page, and make your changes using the format toolbar.

Please source all pictures from FreeDigitalPhotos.net as these are royalty free. Additionally you can use images you have bought or photos you have taken.

Also please see our notes on Writing for the web.
