National Curriculum Changes

The new curriculum aims to be much more than the sum of all the different subjects. It is designed to overcome the ‘box’ syndrome suffered by many students by offering opportunities for students to see the links between the subjects. While all the traditional subjects are included, cross curricular dimensions make these connections in order to reinforce learning. They provide a context and demonstrate the between subjects. The dimensions include:

  • identity and cultural diversity
  • healthy lifestyles
  • community participation
  • enterprise
  • global dimension and sustainable development
  • technology and the media
  • creativity and critical thinking.

All curriculum subjects have been devised to a common format which covers

  • key concepts which cover the big ideas of each subject
  • key processes which focus on the skills required to make the subject work
  • range and content which shows the breadth of study.

Together with the curriculum opportunities, this approach helps to show the links between subjects and how they can work together effectively. When students see the connections and relevance to the world at large, they are more likely to understand and remember the content of each subject.

The overall aim is to enable young people to become:

  • successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
  • confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling live
  • responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
