| Pod title and reference code Linking good design and technological knowledge Maintenance MA/T/TN3 |
| Time 1 hour |
| Rationale and context The students must work collaboratively in their teams if they are complete the task. Each team must assign responsibilities so that every tem member knows what their role is. This is how a product designer would work. The teams are then given the briefs’ specifications. Most of these are already set. They will therefore only have to make informed choices on which materials and nets to use. The teams have to come up with a range of ideas for their solution. |
| Learning objectives Making links between good design and technological knowledge Working efficiently in teams taking on different roles. |
| Resources Worksheet 2 |
| Stimulus activity Make a functional card model. |
| Main Work with Worksheet 2: specifications. Why does our product designer need specifications? Elaborate. Our Maintenance Officer has a problem and he/she needs to employ a specialist (the product designer) to come up with a solution. The MO writes the specifications specifying what his needs are. It is a list of statements that states what the product should be like. Teacher to talk through all five specs explaining the relevance of each.
Pupils complete specs. Explain the need for a Design Ideas page. It helps the students to articulate all they have learnt so far It gives everybody in the team a chance to express creatiivity. it provides a range of ideas The students will need to work with their specs, nets and research on materials. The product must be based on a net developed in Maths. Students within the team must quick sketch ideas adding annotations specifying materials to be used, details, etc Each team member to work on their area (bins & lids), bin station, graphics. Teams members to work collaboratively to discuss best solution for the problem. Each team has to produce a scaled model made out of card of the chosen design. Explain why they need to make a model. Making a model will help the students determine whether their idea is going to work or needs modifying. A model will also allow them to test their product quickly and cheaply. It will help them to consider how they will make the final product with their chosen materials. Project manger to inform teacher on materials and quantities required for next lesson. Students to photograph the model for record keeping. |
| Future learning Teams will have their final design and a model to help them start making their final product. |
