MA_Lesson 1
Title What should we use to make a recycling bin?
Reference number MA/S/TN/1
Time needed for delivery of podlet 4 hours
Rationale and context Pupils will consider what properties of materials are important in the design and construction of recycling bins. They design and carry out fair tests to compare materials and decide what to use to make their bins.
Learning objectives Know that a wide range of materials could be used to make a bin. Understand that choice of material depends on its properties. Understand that properties of materials can be compared by using fair tests. Pupils will: Research a range of materials to test Decide what properties are important for a recycling bin (eg waterproofness, low density, strength, sustainability) Design a range of tests to compare the materials In collaboration with maths and technology, design and make a bin and present it to the Olympic Committee as part of a competition.
Resources and supporting materials Standard lab equipment
Stimulus activity Go for a materials walk around the school. What materials can they see used for particular purposes? Why were these materials chosen? Are there any unfamiliar materials in use? Can they see any examples where they think a different material would be better?
Main activities 1. Materials walk (see stimulus activity) 2. Decide what properties are important for recycling bins 3. Research and choose a range of materials to test eg cardboards, plastics, wood, withies 4. Design fair tests to test their properties eg does the mass of the material increase if left in water? eg comparison of density eg tests for compressive and tensile strength 5. Research the environmental impact of using each material.
Activities to demonstrate progress and reflect on learning Assessment against How Science Works criteria Presentation of results to Olympic Committee
